Where It Started

Today, presales engineers record a number of zoom calls and back and forth to be certain they understand the multi-faceted requirements required to scope a project and detail the Scope of Work document for the customer to review. It's 6:00 and the engineer has all he needs to write the scope, which can be 10-20 pages. It looks like another late night (missed family dinner, late to the soccer field), AND all this happens before the customer has even agreed to the project!

That was the life of our co-founder, Jon, before launching ScopeStack. Having moved through increasingly larger Value Added Resellers (VARs), he found that the problem existed at every size organization in the IT Services industry. At best, companies had tried to solve the problem by building spreadsheets with brittle macros to automate some of the documentation, and that was fine… IF you had the latest copy of the spreadsheet AND filled out the fields just right. 👎

A Memorial Day text to co-founder Andy in 2017 would start a chain of events that would culminate in the launch of ScopeStack! By October of that same year, a proof of concept, Ruby on Rails application led to rudimentary Scopes of Work with more advanced features layered through the year's end.

As 2017 closed, Jon was at a church event where he was challenged to find "a God-sized vision for his family… something so big that it would take God's help to fulfill." After weeks of the proof of concept floating around in his head, Jon and his wife Alison believed that building a company around that application was their God-sized vision. It would get Jon out of the exhausting Presales role and give back time and energy to the people he had worked with over the years. On January 5, 2018, when Jon called Andy and pitched the idea, Andy responded that "it was hard to argue with God." Jon's reply? "Good, because I quit. My last day is January 19, and we have a company named ScopeStack."

That was the first of many "betting on the team" moments as ScopeStack began to scale.
